The subscription model has its advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, developers usually choose it because it provides a constant flow of funds for the development of their applications, and the user does not have to pay a large amount of money for a given program right away and can resign from the subscription when he no longer needs it. On the other hand, however, it can be annoying that every month a smaller or larger sum is taken from the account. The subscription model, which has been operating for many years in the App Store, lacked a single tool that would allow application authors to convince users to subscribe - promotional codes. However, this is about to change soon.

Promotional codes have been allowing developers to distribute their applications for years, e.g. in various contests or other actions, or make them available at a reduced price. However, in the case of applications that offer full access to their functions as part of a subscription and which can be downloaded for free from the App Store, this tool was not available. In iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 this possibility will appear.

Promotional codes will allow developers to give users a subscription for a fixed or indefinite period of time for free or at a reduced price. They will be implemented in the App Store in the same way as before. This information has appeared on Apple's developer service on the guidelines for automatically renewable subscriptions.
